Vestry Biographies

Edna Rich- Ballentine - A native of North Carolina, Edna Rich-Ballentine graduated from Bennett College with a degree in Home Economics.

Edna proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 13 years. Through her Air Force Service she served on bases both domestic and overseas. On all bases she was in charge of all of the Dining Halls, Flight Kitchens, Linen Exchange, Housing Supply, Hotels, Mortuary, Dormitories and Female Squadron Commander.

Upon her return to Raleigh, Edna was appointed by the City Council to the Eastside Neighborhood Task Force. The organization was set up for the citizens to voice their concerns about neighborhood developments. She served as Chair person for two years. Edna served on the Raleigh Downtown Historic District Commission. She worked with the Commission for the past four years. Edna is dedicated to serving her community and the citizens of South East Raleigh.

Edna is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. She has served on the Vestry, Altar Guild and was Chairperson of the Hospitality Committee for several years. She is in her second term on the Vestry, and currently serves as Senior Warden. .

Burns T. Cooper Sr. - Burns Cooper was born and grew up in Monrovia, Liberia. Burns graduated from the University of Science and Technology in Ghana with a BA in Sociology and Law. He went on to receive his Masters Degree in Social Work from Howard University.

Burns served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg. Burns currently works as an Intake Supervisor with Durham County, Department of Social Services.

Burns is married to Joan Cooper. He is the father of two sons, Burns and Colby.

Burns is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. He serves on the Vestry.

Kathy Hudson Marshall - A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church.  She is a member of the Hospitality Ministry, Sunday School Assistant and Vestry.

Christine Wyche - Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, Christine is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. She is an active member of the Flower Ministry and Vestry.

Christine is married to Edward Wyche. She is the mother of two daughters, Nicole and Kelly.

Hortense A Francis - Hortense Francis graduated from Howard University with a BS School of Liberal Arts.
 
Hortense is married and proud mother of a daughter.

Hortense is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. At St. Ambrose she serves on the Vestry. She is also a member of  the Hospitality and Lay Eucharistic Ministries.

Jessie Harris has been attending St Ambrose since 2005 and was confirmed in December 2006. She is a member in good standing. Jessie is active on the Finance Committee, recently selected as Chair of the Finance Committee. Jessie also serves as a LEM.

Jessie graduated from Oregon State University in 1995 with a BS in Liberal Studies concentrating in Political Science and Communication with a certificate in Peace Studies. Jessie has worked for the Social Security Disability Determination Services for 14 years with 7 years at the NC Disability. Jessie is the proud mother of twin sons who live in Oregon. Jessie best friend for the past 12 years is her Airedale Terrier, Ashante. While Jessie was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, her mother and grandmother are from Rich Square, NC and Jessie still has relatives in this area.

Shirley Baldwin Page - Shirley Page was born in Harnett County, NC. Shirley graduated from Saint Augustine’s College with a BS Degree in Science (Biology & Chemistry). Shirley was a Science Teacher, Assistant Principal and Principal of Garner Senior High School. She was employed by the Wake County Public School System for thirty-three years.

After retiring from the Wake County Public School System, Shirley became the Director of Staff Development at Tuskegee University. She retired from Tuskegee in 2001.

Shirley is the proud parent of three children and four grandchildren.

Shirley is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church.

Karsten Tyson - Originally from Greenville, North Carolina, Karsten Tyson currently teaches Spanish at Saint Mary’s School, an Episcopal Boarding and Day School for girls’ grades 9-12 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Karsten has taught in both public and private schools over the course of 12 years. Prior to teaching at Saint Mary’s, Karsten taught at Broughton High School and Word of God Christian Academy.

Albert Cadogan - Albert was born in Georgetown, Guyana, South America and is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church.  He is currently serving his second term on the Vestry and is an active member of the Choir, and Episcopal Laymen.  He is past chairman of Technology & Communication committee,  past president of the Laymen, past Treasurer, and member of Building & Grounds.

Marcus Clarke – A native of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Marcus Clarke graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Athletic Training.
Prior to college, Marcus served in the US Army as a Medical Specialist. He was stationed in Germany and Ft. Stewart, GA. He would later return to the Georgia area, and met his wife Sabrina while working there. He is the proud father of Marissa and Maurice, who both serve as acolytes at St. Ambrose.
A life-long Episcopalian and the son of an Episcopal priest, Marcus participated in many activities in the church while growing up. He sang in the youth choir, participated in the EYC, and served as an acolyte. He currently teaches Sunday School and is now serving his second term on the Vestry.

Alvin G. Ragland - A native of North Carolina, graduated from Fayetteville State University with a degree in Business Management and Economics. Al completed the Executive Management Institute at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and attended the University of North Carolina and the Office of the Banking Commissioner Bank Director Institute.

Al is currently the Chief HR Executive, Department of Public Safety, President/CEO, AHK Global Resources, LLC.

Al has served on and serves on various boards throughout the Triangle including, Paragon Commercial Bank, Morrisville Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Ballet and Wake Education Partnership. Al was appointed by Governor Beverly Purdue to chair the State of  NC Personnel Commission and he is the Honorary Co-Chair for expansion of Wake Med’s Western Wake Hospital. Al has won several management awards for performance and leadership by Fortune 1,000 companies.               

Al is a member in good standing of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. He has severed on the Vestry as Senior Warden. Al lives in Cary with his wife Hilda who is a corporate officer and VP Corporate Public Affairs, and daughter, Katherine who is a recent graduate student at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. now working for Thomson Reuters, a global health care consulting company.

Lori D. Roberts Wiggins - Lori is an award-winning journalist and communications professional with over 20 years experience as a reporter for several major metropolitan newspapers in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Lori currently is a community columnist, public relations and communications strategist, and a regular contributor to local and national online and print publications. As a freelance journalist, Lori pens "Midtown Muse," a weekly column for the News & Observer that focuses on people, places and traditions in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina’s state capital. Lori also is a regular contributor to the Triangle Tribune, and other local and national publications.

Lori holds BA degrees in English and Speech Communications from UNC-Chapel Hill, with graduate studies at the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Lori is a life-long Episcopalian who was baptized, raised, confirmed and married at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church. She returned to Raleigh in 2006 with her own family, husband, Jim Wiggins, and their daughter, Teeghan, 14. Both also were confirmed at St. Ambrose on Father’s Day 2011.

Lori is a member of the 2014 Class of the St. Ambrose Vestry.
